About Korean Independence Activists

Japanese Korea is the period when the Japanese Empire annexed Korea between 1905(officially 1910) to 1945. During Japanese Korea, Japan introduced harsh colonial rule over Korea. They banned Koreans using their language, forcibly took their resources and lands, arrested for political or other reasons, exploited Koreans to labor for their benefit. Under these colonial rules, many Koreans started to defy them, and many protest movements for independence broke out in Korea. Despite the Japanese military trying to suppress these protests, the independence desire swept through Korea. These independence protests were peaceful protests without being armed to achieve independence from Japan. People came out onto the streets, crying "Daehan Minguk Man sae! (Long live the republic of Korea!)" (Blakemore 2018).

Woo Deok-sun was one of the Korean Independence activists who planned assassination with Ahn Jung-geun, who assassinated Hirobumi Ito for peace. He is not well-known despite his significant achievement.
